There are both server side and client side applications that properly implimented can protect your valuable resources. Just having anti-virus software is not enough protection anymore. Anti-virus software will only catch a fraction of the bad software out there designed to steel your privacy. Are you sure that right now as you are reading this post that someone is not watching what you are doing? Waiting for you to type some personal data, capturing the data and then robbing your checking account.
For you home you can use LavaSoft's Ad-aware or Yahoo has a new toolbar integrated spyware removal and monitoring tool. If you have SP2 installed on your Windows XP machine, it in addition provides a level of protection from spyware. I recommend that you run several different programs since each program will capture different spywares.
As a last note, you should not have to pay for spyware removal tools, there are many quality free tools on the Internet to be downloaded. Check Zdnet or Tucows to find the latest downloads.
